Seeing Red!

Red is an increasingly popular color in decorating circles but because it is such a rich bold color, it is often used as an accent color rather than the main color in a room. Most people typically incorporate reds into chinaware or other smaller items and accessories that only are seen on occasion.
If red is a favorite color of yours and you are planning on decorating with it, be cautious. Red comes in such a variety of hues that you will want to be aware of how many items you decide to purchase that has red in the design.

Even though there are many different red hues, they do not all look good when they are paired together. Darker reds tend to mix better with other colors than the brighter reds. You need to exercise caution when mixing too much red into the décor as it will draw the eye and cause an overload of visual energy.
If you decide to use a lot of red, such as a wall color, you should be careful to use a similar red or a dark color in your flooring choice. While an all red area rug isn’t ideal if your walls are red, choosing floral area rugs that have a reddish floral pattern is a great use of the color. Opting for laminate flooring or wood floors is a great way to make sure that you can change the look of the room as often as you like by replacing your rugs.

When trying to pair items with your red walls, may be difficult. When you paint your wall, also paint a small piece of wood or swatch of cardboard to carry with you when you choose your other items for your room. Having the exact color to match to is important when dealing with a color that is available in so many hues.

Use the color wheel to assess which colors look good together and what colors aren’t good pairs. A color wheel can be easily located on line and can be used as a basic guide for those who are less knowledgeable about interior design.
Certain colors don’t go well with red. Greens for instance, may look nice with reds but may remind others too much of Christmas. The same goes for using yellow and red together, it gives the viewer a distinct feeling of being at McDonalds. It’s also the combination for ketchup and mustard and just feels awkward.

When using reds, it’s probably best to match it with a red, brown, or white color. Even gray would work on occasion. Bold reds look better with bold blacks, while more muted reds seem to pair better with brown.
The best place for using red in your décor is in the living room or bedroom. If you are going to use red in the bedroom, try a darker hue, as it gives a sense of relaxation and darkens the room to make it feel cozier. Using a brighter red in the living room, might inspire conversation and encourage lively visits with friends and relatives. It also gives an air of sophistication. Remember that the colors it is paired with will determine the feel just as much as the red itself.
