Why Would Seagrass Carpet Be Better than Sisal Carpet?

Seagrass and sisal are two types of plant fibers that are both flexible and strong, making them ideal candidates to make carpeting out of. But which one is better? Seagrass has a more natural look and feel to it that makes an ideal rug or doormat, while sisal is finer and can be woven into house carpet much easier. They are both stain resistant and somewhat pricey, but let’s look at each material a little more.

You may have heard of seagrass carpet, as it is a little better known than sisal. It comes from eastern Asia, and is actually a weed that grows underwater. This results in plant fibers that are thicker than sisal, and they have a somewhat reed-like appearance. Because of this it doesn’t really have the same look or feel that regular carpet has. It makes for a great rug on a wooden floor, or a mat for the door, but it’s not often seen as carpeting that covers the entire floor. It also resists dyes, so it only comes in a natural tan or brown color. Nonetheless, it can be an excellent choice for certain home aesthetics.

The other option is sisal carpeting, which is a material that comes from southern Mexico. Sisal is a much finer fiber, and so it can be woven into thread that looks remarkably like carpet. That means it’s easier to make into full floor carpet. Sisal is also resistant to dye, but it’s often woven together with wool to make a wool / sisal hybrid carpet that is quite comfortable to walk on. It is pricier than seagrass though, so be aware of the cost before you commit to buying a lot of it.

Both of these plant fibers make for excellent carpet – it’s just a matter of which one matches your home better. Do some shopping, either online or in a carpet store, and choose well – they will both last a long time before you need to worry about them wearing down.
